Back in the 1900s, the Koot family raised cows in a small ranch. Alongside cattle raising, my grandfather, Jaap Koot, grew various plants including tulips, daffodils, gladioli, irises and crocuses in the same estate. Needless to say, it became an important part of the Koot family farming tradition. The growing of bulbs became a tradition passed on from generation to generation. My father, Cees Koot, continued to grow plants and flowers, especially the bulbs.
Specialization in unusual flower bulb species
He concentrated on growing several varieties of unusual bulb species, among them Colchicum, Kaiserscrown, Ixia and Allium. Some 30 years ago, we bought a flower bulb species called Crocus Sativus. Reading up about this variety made us realize we just found our gold. It kindled our interest and vision to expand our growing capacity. Currently, Crocus Sativus is our biggest seller.
In 2005, father Cees Koot left the cultivation of Crocus Sativus entirely to his son, Jaap, and daughter-in-law Anna. The company name has since changed to: Bloembollenbedrijf J.C.Koot
